Just received an e-mail newsletter from the office of Councillor Grimes, and it says he is working with our local Business Improvement Association (BIA) to put in a "Community Square" on Lake Shore Blvd. at Fifth:

The Sailboats, a year long project undertaken by the Lake Shore Villages Business Improvement Association have lit up the Lake Shore in New Toronto. They are lit by light emitting diodes (LED). Total power use is about 8 Watts per fixture and they emit the same amount of light as a 100 Watt incandescent light bulb.

The BIA is also working with me and the City to build a community square at Fifth Street and Lake Shore Blvd. The plan is to complete the square this year, and if possible power it with solar and use the LED lights.

Does anyone know more about this? Which corner would it be on?

I would love to see a community square. I know there are some people in the community who have some great ideas. Maybe we should have a meeting to get people together to put together a proposal, before the election and put it to the politician who are running for councillor.
How small can something be and still qualify as a "community square". My fear is that this will just become another place for folks to hang out smoking and drinking out of paper bags.
That's odd - there doesn't seem to be any room on that corner for anything resembling a 'square'.

Better idea: raze Jay Jay's a build a square at Lakeshore & Fourth...
The plan is that they will build out into 5th street, using several of the parking spaces to create the space. There are supposed to be benches and trees.

Its going to be hard for people to drink our of paper bags because all of us die hard Lake Shore parents are going to be eating ice cream and sitting in the benches with our kiddies, right?

:) I know that's what we'll be doing anyways:)
